Mencari Surga Otaku di Singapura

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Pokoknya ngiler deh.

Masih ada tempat lagi yang bisa dikunjungi. Tentu saja, Kinokuniya. Salah satu tempat yang membuat saya sempat berpikir: I wish I’m lost here. OMGOMGOMG, I’m dying to buy one. BTW, di Takashimaya ini saya bertemu buku “How to awake the enterpreneur inside you”.

Tempat terakhir. Zangetsu, ban-kai!

What I will miss about Singapore

Friday, August 15th, 2008

To live about one and half month in Singapore has given me joys and new knowledge. Project execution work as planned, without too much hiccup or show stopper. Technically, I learn some cool code-fu jutsu while completing the project. But that’s not what I want to higlight.

To live in Singapore for me means thinking more about what you do and thinking less about the rest. Either for leisure or for profit, you don’t need to burden your mind with significant others. Transportation? S/MRT is your best friend. Granted, some Singaporean has been complaining about the aging MRT. Indeed you can see the bone must have come from the ancient age, but the experience is still way much better than Transjakarta. Every now and then the MRT come by to serve the waiting passenger. The MRT only stop at the designater shelter, not in the middle of traffic light nor somewhere inapproprate.

The SMRT (subway) is even better. Every five minutes there will be train coming in both direction, going from or going to. On peak hour the train will be full but not until as full as Jakarta’s electric train. It is full as people can humanly fit, not as full as packed sarden can as you may experience in Jakarta.

Paying the S/MRT ticket is also “addictive”. You only needed to attach your Ez-Link prepaid card (contactless smartcard) on the given gates (for train) or devices (bus) and you’re ready to go/leave. The same scheme applies to parking, taxi, McDonalds, tolls (ERP), and other merchant supporting this electronic payment method.

Thinking more about what you want to do and thinking less about the rest. Means I can comfeniently type this post, while enjoying ChannelNewsAsia without worrying about how tough my transportation experience tomorrow, nor worrying about where I can have breakfast, lunch and supper. S/MRT will be there, and food are everywhere to found.

Thinking more about what you want to do, and thinking less about the rest. I will be missing Singapore.

PS:

I’ll be (finally?) back to Jakarta this afternoon. Talking bout reality, reality hurts.

Singapore Enterpreneur Culture

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

The other night, on yet another taking-care-of-the-project-do-not-let-the-website-down, I bump into Singapore enterpreneur community site. I started with the video cast, The Geek Goddess Show, via sgenterpreneurs.com.

It is pretty amazing for me to live a while in the country with such environment. To see such youngsters to ignite and pull out an energetic event own their own is very motivating. Further, looking into podfire.sg, one of a startup, we can watch many interesting startup video pitch. It’s thrilling to watch and asking myself, when I’m gonna stand in front and presenting one of my own.

Above moment made me think of why Singapore startups look so lively. I can identify four major causes.

First, internet is a common culture. I don’t have any evidence to show that average people here, especially young generation, are internet savvy. However, URL is a common thing to see in TV, ad board, and maybe in other media as well. This is a fertile ground where potential consumer are waiting to be “fed”.

Second, broader connectivity. I can watch youtube, streams last.fm, load flash app without feeling any lag. Most of RIA demands broader bandwidth to compensate features. Not that small bandwidth does not promote creativity and innovation, only that sky-limit environment is a guarantee of unbounded experiment.

Third, available incubators. Incubation is a well known and well supported process by many institution. NUS has their own annual event where startup can take the challange and get funded. Indonesia is not yet near this stage, however some effort seem to be seeded already, eg: INAICTA event, though it’s not designed to look for and fund an idea.

Enterpreneur community. So far, I can only found e27. However, I suspect there are already some startup and wannabe-founder connected via thin line translucent network. Only during a specific event, those enterpreneurs will be visible.

Last but not least (bonus): stop thinking out of the box, get out of the box instead! (quoted from Poh Kam Wong, Professor at NUS Business School and LKY School of Public Policy; Director of NUS Entrepreneurship Centre; Angel investor)

It’s true, there may still many other major or subtle causes that I didn’t notice. You can try to find it yourself by surfing dot sg domains.
