Determining Indefinite Number

January 29, 2008 · Filed Under Dev Hours, Usability · Comment

I just run out feeds to read (haven’t got private time to read dannychoo’s), so I start pushing my not-yet-addded reading materials into my GReader. Then, I stumble upon this search pagination pattern from ypattern. I don’t have any issue with regular pagination pattern, but the search pagination pattern tickles me a bit. As stated there, search result can be indefinite (and making it definite could take up some valuable resource) so how can we render the control effectively (without renering links to empty page). What upper bound we should display? I wonder there’s a special technique to work on this search related pattern.

have anything to say?

Piracy: artist, consumer, and label company

January 27, 2008 · Filed Under Business · Comment

Today I hear alot about piracy word. Since morning ’til evening. The most recent one was from extravaganza program. Having read halfway thru freakonomics makes me think: what does really lay betwen the artist, the consumer, and the label company?
Yes, there are three parties involved here. Not only artist and consumer, like what some of us have been thought, but also the label company. My thumb is numb already, so let’s go to my redline. What I’ve been thinking is that the current music industry business model is no longer fit the market. On indonesian case, specifically, buying capacity is terribly low while OTOH people seem to happily welcome the currently growing options of music genres (boy bands, trios, solos, singing actor/actress, and etc).
The artists keep pushing their limit of creativity, while also blindly accept their label old fashioned way of doing business, ie: furiously trying to sell cds and dvds.
Cast off your moral calculator if you still have it attached atm. Consumer incentive includes exchanging money, not exceeding, to a value they are pursuing. Since pirated copy in general does not differ much from the original one except packaging and phsycological matters, many incapable buyers will choose the pirated one.
I am not endorsing piracy here. My red line is if you want to survive in this business you have two options. If you have the hand of God, then change your market buying capacity. Or else, goodluck on looking other viable business model to use. Take Radiohead as example.

My First Mapplet

January 25, 2008 · Filed Under General · Comment

Been dreaming about this for quite some time. Has prepared the data for quite a while in dapper. Been playing a bit not so long. Finally, time permits and also the God of Bandwidth has been genereous, I finished my first mapplet. Mapplet is, roughly, an app (utilizing javascript APIS) you can run on Google Map platform. Yes, I liek to call it platform since it enables us to play above it.

Okay, about my mapplet. It’s a very simple one. Basically what it does is adding marker into the map. It utilizes data (JSON) invoked from dapper. So, if you load this mapplet, you’ll see marker on cities having 21cineplex theater.
Dapper gives me city list then I pass it thru GClientGeocoder to retrive GlatLng (latitude & longitude) object and finally render it onto the map.

Further improvement may contains movie schedule on each cities. Data are there already, I just need to pull it over and then make the map interactive (shows info when marker is clicked).

Ah, a perfect end to my weekend :). Huzzah!

Now Playing: Super Love Song - Bz’s

PS:
Actual city list data belongs to 21cineplex.com

Long time no blog

Blue sky

It’s been a week or so I haven’t blog anything. There are some scattered pieces in my head, but I haven’t found good words to chain them together. Here are some of them:

  • Incentives. I found this in Freakonomics. The more I read, the more I can into a conclusion that every system (man-made occurences) in this world is moved by incentives. Freakonomics is getting interesting for it forces me to think out-of-the-box. Like, managing risk. There is risk that we fear, but there is also risk that we want to avoid. It’s similar to knowing what we want and knowing what we need.
  • Err, wth. I’ve already forgotten what to write here. Uh oh, Rockefeller Habits and Great Game of Business. I think I’ll read more on it later. The Rockefeller habits is a great source philosophy to learn and apply, eg: The right people doing the right thing right. And the latter, it answers my chicken-egg problem, which is actually very simple to solve. You know, I’ve these words: I love my company as much as my company loves me. it does look like chicken egg problem, right? While employee want to work only we he/she is paid good enough, the employer on the other hand need its employees to work hand first so it can pay its employees. Nope, it doesn’t need to be such complicated. Actually we can setup a simple rule which involves everybody in the company. Setup a minimal (yet make sense) requirement of performance, which everybody should contribute to. And setup a performance reward when this limit is achieved. This way, everybody will (hopefully) be motivated since anything he/she do will count. This limit/goal can be a simple as keeping sales performance, increase profit by x% or creates y% of efficiency. Simple, no?

The sky is blue, vast, yet limitless.

yet another new haircut

Originally uploaded by Framed Geek

Yes, I have myself a new haircut yesterday. Kinda shorter than what my wife and I had expected. My wife have always said that me with a short hair would look like an elementary school boy :p. Indeed, I’m looked so much younger, no?

I was photographed in the similar manner as my former new haircut photo, ie: in a taxi :D. Jump to my flickr page to see it in a bigger size. Bigger doesn’t guarantee cuteness though :p. As a bonus, you can also see my recent gundams and also some material from newtype magazine. Check it out yo ;)

Transport course

January 3, 2008 · Filed Under General · 2 Comments

Ya gk mecing dong, bebek yg harusna pake sambel korek malah dkasi sambel ijo kyk nasi padang:(
