Work Structure and Reality

January 30, 2005 · Filed Under Regular Hours · Comment

Dari thread slashdot yang sama dengan posting tentang “klaim Linux Security Myth oleh MS”, aku dapet komen ini .. tentang apa yang mungkin terjadi di sebagian besar tempat kerja .. jadi anda yang berada di atas, waspadalah .. seringkali tengok yang bawah .. karena yg paling bawah adalah pondasi anda .. jika yang bawah crumble .. you *will* going down as well.

di cuplik dari slashdot:

It’s a pretty common theme among large companies, however. The people that steer the metaphorical ship don’t have any real idea of what goes on at the lower levels of their organization. Nor would they want to. If we run with this metaphor, they don’t really want to know how the engine produces power or the detailed physics behind why a rudder turned 15 degrees one way turns the ship at a certain rate. It doesn’t help that they’re typically shielded/buffered from reality by some butt-kissers looking to get a bigger slice of the pie.

Everyone from the bottom up to middle management (workers, their managers, and the managers’ bosses) is where the real work is done at most companies. The directional control is usually handed down from on high by the execs, and it’s up to the workers to get make it happen. The ones at the lower levels the ones with the greatest sense of reality, and can head off problems before they’re really problems. It’s only when the executives start meddling around the real work that things start becoming ugly.

Long live underped :)

Linux Security is a Myth

Linux security is a ‘myth’, claims Microsoft

Yeah, you can see my happy face .. can wait to read what’s on slashdot. Just another silly claims, that Linux is not ready for mission critical, that Linux was installed for the sake of there were Unix on the machine, that Linux kernel is developed by hundreds *not* hundred thousand people (I don’t know the number exactly, which is too bad) which is less than what hey had on Microsoft, that Linux was not as good as Microsot because no one is accountable for the security of the Linux kernel, that people (in UK?) are holding back Linux deployment into the mainstream because the operating system does not have the solution stack that they were expecting (and Microsoft does? Wooot) ..

Okay I won’t hold you, let’s have some fun reading this slashdot thread .. Rool on!

Version Controlling User Interface

January 28, 2005 · Filed Under Dev Hours · Comment

Hmm, is it possible? Or how feasible is it? How far can we version controlling the UI? Not just version controlling, but also maintain modification accross teamwork.

I work on some delphi project, I have no problem with the non-ui-code but I do have some troubles managing UI modification. We use svn on this project, too bad, I put the *.dfm into versioning as well. When we change some form psosition, or it’s widht or height the .dfm file will be modified. Wht’s so wrong with that is when we don’t mean the modification to affect the bussines aspect. Form posisition would not affect anything since it will be ‘poDesktopCenter’-ed.

So far, that’s what I’ve seen but I’m suspecting there will be more.

Maybe I’ complaining too much (?). Somebody shut my mouth!.

Lagi beteh

January 26, 2005 · Filed Under Mood, Regular Hours · 1 Comment

Ya gitu deh … terulang lagi fase-fase depresi .. Mood turun pol, kerja udah gk ada napsu sama sekali .. Doooh, parah banget pokoknya .. makin dipikir makin cenut-cenut ne kepala …

Add Things Up

January 25, 2005 · Filed Under Regular Hours · 2 Comments

Yeah, that’s the way it has always been happening. I keep on adding things to my day, and then completely lost track of my goal that day.

*sigh* I wonder, how to keep myself on track. It’s quite confusing. You can see in my personal assesment, I like thing unchanged, I like to do pretty monoton stuff. But, look at my day, I lost most of the hours on something completely away from the track I should be walking on. That means I don’t like to stay put and do nothing .. in constrast with the assesment, I like unchanged stuff ..

I keep on looking something, something I even don’t know what it is .. When I found one, I’ll be hooked a little while with it, pretty much like a week or so .. then the appetite slowly fades away ..

I have task, our client is waiting for the app .. yet, I keep adding things in between my task .. And in the end of the day I mumble: “Crap, what have I done today?”

Today, I kept on adding things …

Take a look what they suggest me for my career … That would be 180 degrees away from my path ..

Part I: PERSONALITY EVALUATION

Your Social Boldness: Introverted VS Extraverted
You are quite introverted. Socially, you prefer a more relaxed, low-key environment, rather than the hustle and bustle of a wild night in the city. You tend not to talk a lot, but when you do people listen, because when you say something it has meaning. You are not seeking the limelight, usually you prefer to let the attention-mongers do their thing while you observe. In an unfamiliar setting, you tend to be cautious and shy while you evaluate the circumstances. You prefer to avoid conflict, so you do not put yourself into a threatening situation. Your shyness may be perceived as unfriendly, but that could not be further from the truth. People need to be patient with you and take the time to get to know the complex, private you.

The Guts To Innovate and Lead

January 24, 2005 · Filed Under Regular Hours · Comment

Inspired by implementation of xmlHttpRequest in Gmail.

What google have done with Gmail has been already awesome. Such a different approach to web-based email management using the new philosophy: “Search, not sort” has won people’s heart.

But that’s not all. You got that buddy, it’s not all. Apparently, or I can say obviously, Google is implementing a non standard Javascript technology (or function, to be exact). Chris Justus has dissecting this unbelievable action to the public.

Why is it unbelievable? What is so great about that implemention, well GMail is great but what else more?

What unbelieveable is Google guts of putting xmlHttpRequest as its core component it Gmail technology. xmlHttpRequest is not standard and yes not all browser implement this (Konqueror, Opera?).

To me it’s not because Google is a big company, or Google is having a truff card of “won’t be failed with Gmail”, or Google have a billion bucks to spend for nothing. To me it’s Google having the guts to innovate and lead.

Langusng aja deh ke poin permasalahannya. Seberapa berani anda berinovasi dan mekemudan (berpeluang) memimpin kompetisi. Apakah anda akn jadi penonton saja? Apakah ini karena faktor bisnis, marketing, and stuff yang menyatakan bahwa berinovasi adalah tindakan dengan resiko *terlalu* tinggi?

I’m insane karena tak tahu apapun tentang bisnis tapi berbicara soal inovasi? Sue me! I’m only a reguler slashdotter keen on tasting new things ..

Go on ..

This could not be a good thing, how do you expect to get a car, or own a home. We suggest you go out and start making some green stuff! Busy corners are a good place to start…
